How to Board Up a Window

If you live in an area prone to severe weather, it’s important to be prepared. One of the most important things you can do is board up your windows in case of a storm. Here are six easy steps to boarding up a window.

1. Choose the Right Materials

First and foremost, you need to think about your materials. Different kinds of wood and other materials offer different levels of protection and durability.

For example, plywood is stronger than particle board or cardboard, but it may be more difficult to find in your area. You should also consider the size of your window when choosing a material, as large windows may require multiple pieces or heavier boards that can be hard to manage on your own or with just one helper.

2. Measure and cut the boards

Once you’ve decided on the right materials, it’s time to measure and cut the boards. It’s important to get an accurate measurement so that the boards will fit snugly against the window.

If you’re working with multiple pieces, make sure to leave enough space between them so that they can be nailed or screwed into place without overlapping.

3. Attach the boards to the window

There are a few different ways to attach the boards to the window. The most common is to use nails or screws, but you can also use zip ties or even duct tape in a pinch.

Whatever method you choose, make sure that the boards are firmly attached so they won’t come loose in high winds or heavy rain.

4. Seal up any cracks or openings

Once the boards are in place, take a close look at them to ensure there are no cracks or openings. If there are, seal them up with caulk, duct tape, or another suitable material.

5. Repeat for all vulnerable windows

Don’t forget to board up all of the windows in your home that are vulnerable to severe weather. This includes basement windows, skylights, and any other openings that could let in wind or water.

6. Stay safe!

After taking care of all the preparation work, it’s time to hunker down and ride out the storm. Stay inside and stay safe!

Following these simple steps will help you protect your home in case of severe weather. Be sure also to have an emergency plan in place so that you know what to do if the power goes out or you need to evacuate.
